Without fixing the mortar, water can seep between bricks, causing them to swell and crack.

Brick repointing involves removing old mortar and replacing it with new mortar. These should be done in smaller sections and not all at once. The mortar that is removed at once can weaken the wall and increase the risk.

Start by working along the walls for about two to four feet. Next, remove the mortar from the horizontal and vertical joints. This is done to protect the bricks. To tap the bricks out, use a cold chisel or a handheld grout saw.

You can also use a joint raker. You can also use a 4-inch angle grinder if you feel confident in your ability to repair bricks. The mortar should be removed to about a half-inch in depth. To remove all dust, you can use a wire brush or a hose. To avoid breathing in dust and debris, don't forget to use a respirator.

Allow the mortar to harden for about an hour. Now, scrape any mortar that remains on the brick surface. To do this, use a strong wire brush.
