Toronto is known for its delicious food, and especially for its wide variety of restaurants. Unfortunately, this variety has also led to a number of grub-control issues in the city. In the early years of Toronto’s development, there were few regulations governing what could be served in restaurants.

This led to a large number of unhygienic establishments, which in turn allowed for rampant grub-control problems.

In the late 1800s, Toronto began to implement stricter regulations governing restaurant hygiene. This led to a decrease in the number of unhygienic restaurants, but it also created a problem – many restaurants were not able to meet the new standards.

As a result, many restaurant owners opted to remove grub from their menus entirely. This policy was nicknamed “grub banishment” and it remained in effect until the late 1970s.

In 1978, the city council passed the Grub Banishment bylaw. It was meant to address the problem of restaurants that were unable to meet health regulations.

The bylaw forced restaurants with unhygienic conditions to either be shut down or convert their cooking methods and/or serving areas.

By 1992, the bylaw had been amended twice so that it covered all restaurants in the city regardless of whether they met current regulations.Toronto's food control board helped shape Canadian food safety laws that are still used today. Its leaders also played a substantial role in the creation of Canada's first university and its first health care system.
